Tips

Surviving a remodel while living in the space can be challenging, but with the right strategies, it can be manageable. Here are some of the best strategies we have to offer after our two decades of helping our clients through this process:

  1. Clear the Space:

    • Anything you don't want to get dusty or broken should be packed away. Our team will treat your home like it's our own but it's always better safe then sorry!

  2. Designate Living Zones:

    • Create a “safe zone”: Set up a space that's off-limits to the remodel, like a bedroom or a corner for eating and relaxing.

  3. Stay Organized:

    • Declutter: Before work begins, declutter and pack away items that won’t be needed, reducing stress and keeping your living space manageable.

    • Label everything: If furniture, tools, or supplies are being moved, label them clearly to avoid confusion later.

  4. Prepare for Dust and Noise:

    • Contain the dust: Shut vents in the rooms that will have the most work.

    • Earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones: Noise will be part of the process, so prepare accordingly to stay sane. Here are a few of our favorite headphones!

  5. Plan for Temporary Living Solutions:

    • Create a temporary kitchen: If your kitchen is affected, set up a mini-kitchen with a microwave, hot plate, or grill, a table, and shelf for some paper plates and foods.

      • A few of our favorite small appliances that are great for the temporary and also fantastic to include in your new kitchen.

  6. Flexibility and Patience:

    • Embrace delays: Remain flexible, as remodeling often takes longer than planned. Patience will be key.

    • Take breaks: Leave the house when you need a mental break from the noise and disruption. Here are a few of our favorite places to try!

      • <Kilda> best lunch or dinner spot

  7. Stay in Communication with Contractors:

    • Regular updates: Communicate frequently with your contractors to ensure the project is on track and to address any issues early. Bring your concerns to the weekly meeting so we can stay on top of things!

    • Establish boundaries: Make sure everyone knows which areas are off-limits and where to focus their work.

  8. Expect the Unexpected:

    • Prepare for surprises: Structural issues, hidden damage, or supply delays may arise—be prepared mentally and financially for unexpected challenges.

    •

By focusing on organization, patience, and proactive planning, you'll be able to manage the stress of living through a remodel. Also remember, you are not alone! We have been through this with many clients and we will be by your side as your dedicated partner the entire time. Highs & lows - you won't be alone!
